The film was produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu under his production company Kalaipuli Films International, along with Linguswamy.[1] Starring Rajinikanth in the lead role, it also featured Shriya Saran and Simran in the lead roles while Murali and Prakash Raj played supporting roles. Cinematography was handled by Sibi Malayil, while J. Williams was cinematographer for the special effects. The film featured music composed by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics written by Vairamuthu and Rajinikanth himself.[2][3] It opened to mixed critical reviews but became commercially successful, being the first-ever Indian film to cross ₹ 100 crore mark at the box office.[4] The movie starts with a seemingly lost tourist in Delhi who is lured into a brothel after he refuses to pay any money to the police, but manages to escape. In a short while, he's rescued by a youth that the police have been looking for as the latter is wanted by them. The escaped man identifies himself as Devadasu and tells the police about the brothel where he was held prisoner and who administered him poison. He also explains how he managed to escape, which is shown to be a result of the police's investigation into a crime they committed. A few days later, they arrest Devadasu from an airport with the help of Siddaiah (Vayalar Ravi).
